Chipmaker Nvidia has committed at least $6.5 billion over the past three months to photonics companies in an effort to eliminate one of the biggest bottlenecks in AI infrastructure.
Photonics uses light instead of electricity to move data, offering significantly faster data transfer and better energy efficiency. This technology is becoming critical because modern AI systems require massive amounts of data to move constantly between GPUs, memory, networking chips, servers, and data centers.
The Problem with Copper Connections
If these internal connections remain heavily dependent on traditional copper wires and electrical signals, power consumption and performance limits will soon become major obstacles to scaling AI.
To prevent this infrastructure bottleneck, Nvidia has announced $2 billion investments in Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell—all of which specialize in photonics technology. Additionally, Nvidia is investing $500 million in Corning for advanced optical connectivity and has joined a $500 million funding round for Ayar Labs. Analysts view these moves as a strategic effort to secure and scale the supply chain before existing infrastructure limits AI growth.
Industry-Wide Shift Toward Optical Tech
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently noted that the company is beginning to scale silicon photonics across its networking platforms and GPU-to-GPU interconnect systems. This shift implies that the tech industry will soon require far more photonics manufacturing capacity than currently exists.
- Other major technology companies are following a similar path:
- AMD and Microsoft have already backed or acquired businesses tied to optical connectivity.
- Despite the high interest, widespread adoption will take time due to the complexities of manufacturing photonics at scale.
